Professional carpet cleaning – how often is best? And what’s lurking in your carpet?
So, your carpet looks clean. Why then would professional carpet steam cleaning make a difference?
And you only had it shampooed about a year ago. Granted, you’ve got a cat, the kids drop food and other stuff on it quite a bit, and since it’s in the family room, it gets a lot of foot traffic. Plus your father-in-law persists in smoking when he comes to visit – despite your not-so-tactful hints about taking his cigarette outside!
And it goes without saying how much constant grime and daily wear and tear most office carpets sustain.
But you (or your cleaner) vacuum your carpet regularly, using a spot cleaner to get rid of any stains. So you don’t need to call in a professional carpet cleaner until the carpet starts to look a bit grubby – right?
Wrong!
Your carpet will trap a myriad of nasties
- Dust mites
- Cockroach waste and allergens (a particular problem in moist, temperate climates like Sydney)
- Pet dander and hair
- Particle pollutants
- Dust and dirt
- Cigarette smoke
- Lead particles
- Airborne toxic gases which can stick to all of these substances and get trapped in your carpet
So when you disturb your carpet with ordinary activities such as walking on it or vacuuming, you’re likely to stir up and release these toxic gases, producing a whole lot of contaminated air in your home.
Sydney’s Allergy Public Enemy No 1 – dust mites
The little horrors we call dust mites deserve a special mention of their own. If you live in a warmish, wettish place like Sydney, there’s a high probability that you’re unwittingly harbouring them in your home or office, even though all your surfaces may look clean and dusted. These microscopic creatures burrow deep into carpet, upholstery and fabric fibres. They’re not the actual allergens – it’s the skin particles and faeces that they shed that are the real problem. So once again, when you vacuum or simply tread the carpet, these nasties get disturbed, becoming airborne. And that’s when sufferers of asthma, eczema and other disabling allergies start getting sick.
Mould – another Sydney undesirable
Unless you’re vigilant, Sydney’s frequent bouts of high humidity will encourage toxic, allergenic and unpleasant smelling mildew and mould to flourish. Particularly during rainy periods, when moisture is tracked into your home or office and is then allowed to sink deep into the fibres of the carpet.
Imbedded dirt means sooner carpet replacement
We all know that carpets represent a major design investment in your home or office. Ground-in, deeply imbedded soil particles and dust do real long-term damage to carpet fibres and matting, significantly reducing the life of your expensive carpet.
So – how often is enough?
Your carpet will almost certainly carry a manufacturer’s recommendation on how often it should be professionally cleaned. However, at the very least you should have your (low traffic) carpet steam cleaned once a year.
To ensure real cleanliness, freshness and optimum health and safety for your family or staff, carpet that gets a lot of use should probably be professionally cleaned every three to six months.
Carpet steam cleaning – your best option
This hot water extraction method of professional carpet cleaning ticks all the right boxes. Boiling water is infused into the carpet under pressure
Loosening dirt, which the machine then draws away, along with the excess moisture
Safe detergents are used when the carpet is heavily soiled, with as little as possible reliance on chemical cleaners
Allergens, mould and odours are removed
Dust mites and bacteria are destroyed in the high water temperature
Technologically advanced machines ensure fast drying times
